A "High" Overview of Cannabis - Cannabis Intro

I bet you’re hearing more about cannabis in Canada lately. Well, what is it? Why are we paying attention now?

New research over the past few years have shown the numerous benefits to taking cannabis for medicinal purposes.  Cannabis is a plant made up of components called cannabinoids, of which there are dozens. Of these cannabinoids, the most well known is THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol), known for its psychoactive effects. More recently though, CBD (Cannabidiol) has made a name for itself for offering the medicinal benefits without the “high” that marijuana is known for. The presence and percentage of these cannabinoids determine the effects you experience when consuming the product.

Products high in THC will give the classic elevated feeling, as THC is psychoactive. Cannabis high in THC has benefits for people with various diseases such as Cancer, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s, Diabetes, Glaucoma, and Inflammatory Bowel Disease. THC may inhibit tumour growth in Cancer;  in Multiple Sclerosis, THC has been found to significantly lessen nerve pain and benefit sleep. THC is known to have anti-inflammatory properties.

CBD, the lesser known cannabinoid in Cannabis is non-psychoactive. You may feel mood enhancement and relaxation without the mind-altering effects of THC. In a 2013 review published in the British Journal of Pharmacology, CBD has been found to reduce nausea/vomiting, tumour and cancer cells, anxiety, depression, and pain; to suppress seizure activity; to fight psychosis disorders, inflammatory disorders, and neurodegenerative disorders.

CBD is available by prescription from your doctor as an oil or tincture, in dried form, or as an edible. Your doctor will choose the appropriate form and concentration for you.

If any of these conditions affect your daily life, consider giving cannabis a try. The literature and research to date is very promising as to the many benefits this plant offers. Now through Compass Canada Clinic, Canadians can benefit from safe and legal access to products that can help.
