Cooking with Cannabis - Cannabis Liver Detox Juice

Our livers do a lot for our bodies, even when we’re at our healthiest. It’s not always possible for our bodies to maintain a healthy balance with so many contributing factors including liquor, pesticides, and many other medications or toxins that may enter our system. While medicines like opioids are designed to help our bodies, a pretty big side effect is the toll they take on our livers. A liver detox that is gentle, and supported by the healing properties of cannabis can go a long way to help support and rejuvenate our systems.

What does your liver do, and why should I detox it?

The liver is responsible for filtering the blood coming from your digestive system , filtering the toxins out of your blood before continuing onto the rest of the body, carrying nutrients. The liver also detoxifies chemicals, metabolizes drugs, and creates proteins that are important for blood clotting.

In simpler terms: Imagine a big oil filter; as the oil passes through, it collects dust, dirt, and any other debris that might have collected in the oil. The oil filter is so good at catching this debris that It needs to be changed and cleaned. A dirty filter, can’t clean oil.

Just like an oil filter, our liver collects and holds onto toxins; this is why doing a liver detox, maintaining a healthy diet and limiting the number of substances and toxins our livers need filter is so important. Lucky for us, our diet and the foods we eat are an easy, and effective way to improve our liver health

Cannabis and the Liver

Cannabis has shown incredible promise for fibrosis of the liver. Liver fibrosis and liver scarring happen when the liver is continuously or repetitively damaged. The liver tries to heal itself by replacing damaged cells with scar tissue, but unlike liver cells, scar tissue does not filter toxins, and cannot filter the blood. Cells called hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) create excess collagen which creates the scarring on the liver and causes liver fibrosis.

The cannabinoids within cannabis and in this case, specifically CBD can help with liver fibrosis because of its ability to interact with our bodies Endocannabinoid System. The ECS, in short, is a complicated signaling system that connects and mediates signals between all of our metabolic processes. A study published in Cell Death and Disease showed how in mice, CBD caused the death of HSCs, stopping the production of excess collagen and as a result, reducing liver fibrosis. While the research is young, scientists are excited about how CBD can effect, and reduce liver fibrosis.

How Much Cannabis Juice Should I drink?

When it comes to the “dose” of your juice, cannabis leaves do not have an intoxicating effect, so there is no risk of getting high from the cannabis juice. For an effective, gentle purge of the liver, twice a day for three days is plenty enough to do a good job at supporting your liver and other “filtering” organs. If you want a deeper, more intense cleanse, drink the juice twice a day for 5 days.

Cannabis detox advice: Drink Water!

When you are doing a cleanse or detox for an extended period of time, the most important tip we have is to stay hydrated. Drinking water is what will push the toxins through and out of your system. Without water, your system turns into a stagnant pool, as opposed to a flowing river.

What You’ll Need:

Juicer (a blender works fine)

Cup

Cutting board

Knife

Strainer (if using blender)

Ingredients:

  • 5 cannabis leaves
  • 2 stocks chopped organic celery.
  • Celery flushes toxins and debris from intestinal tract and liver, removes heavy metals, is a mild diuretic, and has a high content of minerals and trace minerals which helps to al alkalize our bodies and our intestinal tract.
  • 1/4 cup chopped organic flat leaf parsley
  • We recommend flat leaf parsley over curly leaf for its extra nutrients and flavor. Parsley alkalizes the whole body, drawing out alumni, copper, pesticides, and herbicides.
  • 1/4 chopped organic cilantro
  • Cilantro is the ultimate heavy metal detoxer, in particular, it draws out mercury and lead.
  • 1 tsp spirulina powder
  • Has liver protecting capabilities, is loaded with antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and chlorophyll, on top of purging poisonous metals.
  • 1 peeled organic lemon
  • A source of mineral salts and trace mineral salts lemon cleanses the kidneys, spleen, gallbladder helping to support your body's filtration system.
  • 2 cups of fresh water,
  • If you’re using a blender, this allows your ingredients to emulsify and break down properly, if you’re using a juicer, skip the water.

How-To:

  • Wash all produce.
  • Chop finely, if you have a juicer you are using, make sure all vegetables can fit easily through the spout.
  • Juice the veggies, there is no specific order to juice them in, but a good tip is to roll the cannabis leaves tightly, this allows for a better squeeze.
  • Blender: if you are using a blender, add the vegetables and 2 cups of water into the blender and blend.
  • Once you’ve juiced all the vegetables, enjoy! If you’ve used a blender, you can choose to strain the pulp and drink the juice, or, drink it as is, either way, you are getting all of the nutrients you need.

Organic Produce

If you can, use only organic produce the point of doing a cleanse or detox is to get rid of harmful chemicals and to reduce the toxins in the body, organic produce is not sprayed or treated with same pesticides and chemicals the way regular produce is. If using organic produce is not an option, make sure you wash your produce very well.

Our livers are important, and a vital role for our bodies overall health. Whether you’re repairing a damaged liver, or maintaining a healthy one, detox is an incredible tool, packed full of nutrients and benefits, all supported by the healing properties of cannabis.
